First Dance at the Moundsville State Penitentiary

This image was taken at my real wedding workshop for Ryan and Janette at the Moundsville State Penitentiary.  It was an amazing wedding workshop where we shot their wedding while I brought photographers who could learn and build their portfolios…at a real wedding!

During the first dance they unleashed a cloud of fog which made it beautiful.  Congrats to Ryan and Janette! We are currently working on finalizing more real wedding workshops for this year and next.

Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/200 sec at f/7.1, 19mm at ISO 1000, flash fired.  Taken at 7:14pm.

A Lazy Stream in Yellowstone…

This image was taken at my landscape workshop in Yellowstone just last month.  We put our hiking boots on and went for a walk out to this stream about 1 hour before sunset.  It was such a peaceful and beautiful place…finding these types of locations is the reason I love landscape photography.

I always say that the best photographers in the world are landscape photographers.  Why?  Because we have to work around so many elements that are out of our control.  Rain, snow, sun (or lack thereof), whether or not we are blessed with the right amount of clouds etc.  And then those who decide to incorporate landscape photography into their fashion, wedding etc. have even more of an advantage.

Well, this image was taken at my Yellowstone landscape workshop in June.  Shot with a slow exposure during sunrise to capture the mist and spray coming off of a geyser.

Next up!  Rocky Mountain National Park in 2 weeks!!!!

How Did You Get That Shot?

I get asked a lot how I take my shots….what equipment I use, where I place it etc.  This is a production image and finished image placed side by side to show you exactly what I did to capture this image.  As listed on the photo I used 4 Rotolights (favorite lights ever), 4 MeFoto tripods for my lightstands, 2 Pocket Wizards and my Nikon SB910 Speedlight for backlighting (off camera) flash.

I hope this helps!  As you can see in the picture we go to insane places and do REAL shoots at my workshops which are done all over the U.S.  I'd love to see you at one soon!!

Using MeFoto Tripods as Light Stands

This production image was taken at my Miami workshop in May of this year….

Earlier this year at WPPI I bought 4 new Rotolights that I love.  After buying them I asked myself, "How in the world am I going to use these when I'm shooting solo?"  I HATE using lightstands because they just don't work (for me) since I travel so much.  It seems that if I use one that's light enough to take "on the go" it's too flimsy.  If I take one that's very durable and steady, it's WAY too heavy.  So what did I do?

The hot new item at WPPI were the MeFoto tripods made by Benro.  I already own a Benro carbon fiber tripod and LOVE it.  So I felt comfortable buying the MeFoto's and using them as lightstands.  My friends laughed at me at the time for buying 4 of them, but I am SO GLAD I did.

Since WPPI 2013 I've taken the MeFoto's with me to Miami, West Virginia, Montana, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and all over California.  The combination of the MeFoto's with my Rotolights or an off camera flash with a Pocket Wizard just can't be beat.  

The Ticket Taker at the Warner Theater in Morgantown, WV

This image was taken at the old Warner Theater in Morgantown, WV for my workshop there in April.  We did a pin up style shoot, found some old ticket stubs, and put the beautiful Jennifer Blosser behind the counter. I wanted her to have a look like you'd see on someone's face who was bored of working at her job….and I believe she pulled it off.  Fun times!

Hollywood Starlet in Morgantown Warner Theater

This image was taken at my workshop in Morgantown, WV of the beautiful Megan Ward.  We had the privilege of shooting inside the theater that is no longer in use, and we had a great time.  This image was taken using my Rotolights with some side lighting to give it a real dramatic look.  We had a great time and I can't wait to go back!

Shooting Behind a Movie Theater Screen

This production image was taken of us at the Warner Theater in downtown Morgantown.  We were granted exclusive access to the theater that is no longer in use.  We were able to get behind the movie screen and shoot which was AWESOME!

North Shore Hawaiian Sunset Production Image

This image was taken at my workshop in Oahu, Hawaii off the north shore by my attendee Minori Inoue.  It was a beautiful sunset and she sent me this shot which I REALLY appreciated!  I did a little editing magic on it, but the shot is all hers from what she took in the camera and it shows you just how much you can learn at one of my workshops….:)
